Former President Dr. Edgar Chagwa Lungu has broken his silence to address recent political tensions within the Tonse Alliance, calling for calm and reaffirming the Patriotic Front (PF)’s unwavering commitment to the coalition.
In a strongly worded yet conciliatory statement released this morning, Dr. Lungu, who also serves as PF Party President and Chairperson of the Tonse Alliance, dismissed reports of discord among senior PF leaders as “minor political machinations,” asserting that the alliance remains “firm and intact.”
Quoting a Bemba proverb, “imiti iipalamene taibula kushenkana” – which translates to “the trees that grow together will inevitably rub each other” – Lungu acknowledged the natural friction in political collaboration but emphasized the importance of unity in the face of a common adversary.
“The Tonse Alliance was born from a collective desire to offer Zambians firm and grounded hope,” Lungu said. “It is strong because of the strength of the Patriotic Front. Without PF, the Alliance would not command the fear and respect it does from our opponents.”
The remarks come amid speculation over PF leaders’ engagement with other opposition parties, which some critics viewed as a sign of disintegration within the alliance. Lungu dismissed such interpretations, saying the PF’s outreach efforts were in line with the Alliance’s broader mission of consolidating opposition forces.
He also took issue with what he described as “disrespectful” disciplinary actions allegedly taken against PF senior members, warning that such actions should not occur without his guidance as Chairperson.
In a move aimed at restoring internal cohesion, Dr. Lungu revoked all disciplinary letters issued to any PF or Tonse Alliance members and called for an immediate ceasefire on internal disputes.
“I have since directed our PF Party Secretary General to immediately convene a Central Committee meeting that I will co-chair,” he announced.
Notably, the PF leader appointed Vice-President Hon. Given Lubinda to act on his behalf during his absence, both in PF matters and in his capacity as Chairperson of the Tonse Alliance.
“All communiques will come through the acting Chairperson, Hon. Lubinda, and all members are reminded to respect the structure and integrity of the anchor party and the Alliance,” Lungu said.
As Zambia grapples with what the former Head of State described as “humongous challenges,” he reiterated the need for a united opposition front.
“Our citizens are looking up to us not for conflict, but for leadership, compassion, and solutions,” he stated. “Let us deepen our collaboration, support one another, and guard the unity we have built.”
The address is being seen as a timely intervention aimed at preserving the cohesion of the Tonse Alliance as it prepares for a critical election period ahead.
